If you have a dinette like this in your trailer (Ours is a canned ham shaped 61 Shasta Compact) that doesn’t allow you to pull these benches together you can make a couple modifications and it will create one huge bed. Notice mine doesn’t have any legs like the newer boxy Compacts usually do. I know my cushions are 6 ft long and the trailer is what…6 feet wide? So the bed is 6′ x 6′.
Ok, you need three 1 x 2’s that will span the gap between the benches. Cut them so they are a bit longer. See how the insert holes were created under the benches? Those go there like you see below.
Ok, so now what you do is measure the gap area between the two bench seats. Get a sheet of 1/2 inch plywood and cut two 6 ft x 14 inches wide (you could probably go 15 inches). Use piano (I think that’s what they are called) hinges to secure them to existing bench top plywood so they fold. If you don’t have decent wood under the bench cushion you could create a new one for the entire width.Fold down each side as shown.
Lay your cushions flat and VIOLA! One big FAT bed. It’s hard to tell in the pictures but this bed is big. Like I said it’s 6 feet front to back and then whatever the width of the trailer…I believe 6 feet.On mine I do have about a 2-2 1/2 inch gap on the outer edges of the bed. What I’ll do is push the cushions all the way to one side and plop in a strip of foam to fill the gap and then put sheets on top. No big deal.
2 Adults and 2 small kids could sleep on this easily.
That was really clever! We have a 1969 Prowler that we still have a few things to do to it. I started a blog this week & want to post some of our before & after pics on it soon. Love your blog…very inspiring! Thanks!! :0)
