Hi-Lo Renovation Day 10, 11 and 12

I’m happy to say that I’m making steady progress on the 61 Hi-Lo. Thank goodness this is a little trailer or I may not be seeing the end in sight until next summer! I think I’m about a good solid 4-5 days work and I’ll be finished.

This is what I accomplished in the last 3 days.

1. Installed remaining trim
Pretty self-explanatory. I just had a couple trim pieces left to install.

2. Prepped the outer skin for paint
This involved sanding some areas to make sure the surface was as smooth as possible. It also involved taping off areas using Frog tape.

3. Painted the upper half off-white
The top half I painted an off-white. I chose an off-white because I wanted to soften the edges of this trailer so to speak. I used Behr Ultra Premium, primer and paint in off white and key lime and applied it with a foam roller brush.

4. Created a template for the scallops and trim
To create the template I used a old large galvanized bucket I have and traced half the bucket onto poster board. I cut that out. I then had to measure the skin width of the trailer to make sure my scallops would be even. This is sort of a eye-ball type process, unless of course you get real technical and want to figure it all out mathematically. Since my math skills are something left to be desired, measuring and eye-balling worked for me. So anyway, I then traced the scallop shape onto the trailer using a pencil and painted them. I did the same with the trim and created a smaller template in the thickness of the trim.

5. Re-installed the windows and upper half of the door.
I was able to install the windows without too much trouble except for the occasional shifting of butyl tape. A few choice words later and both windows were re-installed. Next I re-installed the upper part of the door.

6. Polished and installed drip caps.
These polished up quite nice. I had a jar of Nuvite and a jar of Mothers. Nuvite by far does the better job! Now you may notice that the window frames aren’t polished. I will get to those eventually but I ran out of Nuvite. So for now they will just have to be dull.

7. Tested out the new awning.
All work and no play is just not that fun so I had to take a break before installing the drip caps and set up the awning to see how it looks with the paint job. I think it looks perfect don’t you? Do you see those two aluminum panels on the front? Those will eventually have red shutters. Same on the rear window as well. So there you have it…progress to date. Next, is putting the electrical back together (Oh joy!) and a lot of minor things like finishing some painting, adding another coat of gloss to the cupboards, etc., Next post I’ll share more of the interior.

Do you think I should paint the propane can key lime as well? Or off-white?

soooooo cute……and me myself would paint the propane tank to match trailer with scallops……I’m in love with them, so the more the merrier!

So cute! Can’t wait to see the inside too! I think the green would look best on the propane tank. 🙂

  3. Absolutely love the lime green. I think the propane tank would be cute with some scallops as well.

I’d paint the silver panels red to mimic shutters but not have anything attached. You could easily add them if you don’t like the look, but I think it’d be grand. I like the propane painted red as well or painted to mimic the scallops. It’s looking good!!

  5. WELL…I THINK WHITE PROPANE TANK WITH SCALLOPS IN GREEN OTHERWISE IT WILL BLEND IN WITH THE CAMPER AND WE WANT IT TO POP…RIGHT? RED SHUTTERS FOR SURE. SO DARN CUTE…GOOD JOB! WHO DID/MADE THE AWNING AGAIN. LOVE IT ALL

It looks just perfect! I LOVE the colors, the scallops and the touch of red. As for the propane tanks, if it were me I’d wait til I’d put the red shutters on to decide about the tanks because I have a hard time visualizing how things would look in combination unless all the things are already there! However you paint the tanks, this is one cute trailer!!!! Thanks for sharing the details and names of products you used.

  8. Simply adorable. If I saw this being towed down the road, I’d turn around and follow it! Good job, and yes, paint the propane tank in scallops to match.

  9. You have done an amazing job so far!!! I would go with the lime, but maybe red too. Decisions decisions. Whatever you decide to go with, it will be sooo cute. Can’t wait to see her finished. 🙂

consider red tanks with white polka dots to match the awning for a bit of pop. Love what you’re doing.

It looks Awesome! You should be proud. This is a dream od mine too.

  12. I was thinking red for the tank. Even with the shutters i think it would look great red, esp with the awning up! It’s looking great!!
