1963 Yellowstone Renovation & Restoration Part 3

In the last post here we left off where the trailer had all new skin. So next comes some interior repairs and additions and finally new paint!

In the bed area I didn’t have any interior lights. I guess there never was any. So I asked the guys at VTR if they could add some and they came up with these sconce beauties. A very talented gentleman added the design to this and they fit right in with the era.

Here is what they looked like “Before”. All the mid-century modern starburst designs were redone on these and they look brand new vintage! Hey, I like that term “brand new vintage”.

One is installed on each side of the rear gaucho/bed area.

Let me tell you that it’s really nice to have light back in the bed area now. It’s perfect for reading and simply just being able to reach up in the middle of the night and turn a light on. Before these were installed I’d have to get out of bed and search around for a different light to switch on.

The cabover interior received a new panel of birch in the front bunk area under the window and all the framing was repaired. In the first photo below you can see why it needed replacing. This was probably the worse of the water damage anywhere on this trailer. It was pretty amazing just how good of shape the frame was in.

That lower window on the left in this photo also was repaired as one of the glass slats was threatening to fall out due to the window mechanics being a bit out of whack. So it’s now working as it should.

They also checked the bearings and added a new Yellowstone decals to the front and rear.

Next, it’s off to the paint shop to get new aqua paint!

Voila! All done! I also had the locks repaired and now have working locks for the door and the baggage compartment.

Here you can see it no longer has a roof vent. I’m actually quite happy about that. There are plenty of windows to open if need be and I never good inside the trailer so the vent was just one less thing to worry about leaking in the future. Also notice that it now has a spare tire rack AND a place to insert a bike rack. No more squeezing tires and bikes into the back of my SUV.

Now we just wait for camping season to begin! If you see us on the road this summer/spring/fall be sure and honk and wave.

  1. I do not own a Little Vintage Trailer, but I am living vicariously through you and all of the trailers for sale on your site. What a wonderful rehab on your trailer! I was excited seeing it in pictures, I can’t imagine how you feel to see the work completed! Best of luck and happy traveling! 🙂

  2. I am like Patricia, I just live through you! This is one “honey” of a home! I would give almost anything to have a vintage in my driveway.
I love that you shared the progress of this Yellowstone. Do you have a name for it yet? and another question I had was, where do the dogs sleep? 🙂
It is rare that you see anything like this up here in Victoria BC. There are a few lovely Airstreams around but not many like Shasta’s or Scotty’s or … Do you still have Jellybean? I loved that one too. You do amazing work yourself with the curtains and cushion covers and anything artsy.
thanks for sharing this one with us.
